Napster will block access to some songs

In what some had predicted would be judgement day for music-sharing service Napster Inc., the company revealed a plan Friday that appears set to block its users from accessing more than one million digital music files from its service.

New.net says it will increase domains

Private company New.net Inc. will announce plans later Monday to offer a series of new Internet TLDs (top level domains), from .chat to .xxx, in a process calculated to sidestep the monopoly control of nonprofit organization ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) on such domains, the company said in a statement.

Father of digital communications dies

Claude E. Shannon, viewed by some as the father of digital communications and information theory, died this past Saturday. He was 84. Shannon, related to Thomas Edison, is best known for his paper "A Mathematical Theory of Communication," which has been credited with assisting in the evolution of modern telecommunications, the Internet, compact disc and satellite technology.
