Research in Motion Ltd. (RIM), on Wednesday, announced new version of its security software for Blackberry messages that it says will ensure the "confidentiality, integrity and authenticity" of messages sent over the device.The software offers support for Secure Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (S/MIME), an encryption feature Waterloo, Ont.-based RIM says is particularly important to government users in Canada and the United States.

AOL aims to secure surfing with new Netscape browser

America Online Inc. (AOL) on Feb. 17 plans to release the first public test version of a new Netscape browser that is designed to protect users from scams and malicious code while surfing the Web. With the release, AOL is taking aim at Microsoft Corp.'s dominant Internet Explorer (IE) Web browser, which has been the subject of many security vulnerabilities. Also, AOL is looking to piggyback on the popularity of Firefox, the open source Web browser that was released in November and has since been downloaded nearly 22 million times.

Gates to unveil new government security program

Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates is due to announce an extension of the company's security initiatives for governments at a meeting with public sector leaders in Prague Wednesday, sources close to the company said. The announcement will come at Microsoft's Government Leaders Forum - Europe, which kicked off Tuesday with remarks by chief executive officer for Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) Jean-Philippe Courtois, that the software company is increasing its participation with governments based on feedback it has received from public sector leaders.

Blaster-B creator sentenced to 18 months in prison

The teenage creator of a variant of the Blaster worm that infected tens of thousands of computers in 2003 was sentenced to 18 months in prison on Friday, prosecutors said. Jeffrey Lee Parson, 19, will spend 18 months in prison followed by a three-year supervised release program, and will be required to do 100 hours of community service, Judge Marsha Pechman ruled Friday in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington.
