Microsoft on ‘rootkits’: Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Microsoft Corp. security researchers are warning about a new generation of powerful system monitoring programs, or "rootkits," that are almost impossible to detect using current security products and that could pose a serious risk to corporations and individuals. The researchers discussed the growing threat posed by kernel root kits at a session at the RSA Security Conference in San Francisco on Tuesday. The malicious snooping programs are becoming more common and could soon be used to create a new generation of mass-distributed spyware and worms.

U.S. agencies receive D+ cybersecurity grade

U.S. government agencies on Wednesday collectively received a D+ grade in their cybersecurity efforts, a slight improvement from the grade they received a year ago from a congressional watchdog committee. A year ago, the U.S. government received a D grade from the House Government Reform Committee, with eight agencies receiving failing grades. For 2004, seven agencies received failing F grades, said Representative Tom Davis, a Virginia Republican and chairman of the committee. Davis, asked during a press conference if he was frustrated with the marks, said government agencies are generally "moving in the right direction." This is the fifth year the committee has given the cybersecurity grades.

Judge declares SCO’s lack of evidence ‘astonishing’

In a sign that the long-running battle between IBM Corp. and the SCO Group Inc. over alleged copyright infringement may be winding down, U.S. district court judge Dale Kimball has labelled SCO's ability to provide evidence to support its case as astonishing and has denied the company's motion to dismiss a key counterclaim by IBM. The latest court ruling filed by Kimball contains a lengthy discussion as to why SCO's motion has been dismissed and is related to nonaction by the company.

Software CTOs call for US cybercrime commission

A group of chief technology officers (CTOs) from major software vendors on Thursday called on U.S. President George Bush's administration to convene a national commission to address cybercrime and identification theft. The 15 CTOs, whose companies are members of the Business Software Alliance (BSA) trade group, met with congressional and White House leaders to discuss issues that concern them, including cybercrime, patent reform and more federal funding for research.
