Java has struggled with the perception of being less productive and more complex than Microsoft technologies

Microsoft Corp.'s Office System group is making available free of charge two "Web Part" toolkits and a Web services toolkit to boost integration of the company's SharePoint Portal Server 2003 package and SharePoint Services sites with applications from vendors such as SAP.

Last week at LinuxWorld in San Francisco, Novell Inc. released the latest version of its enterprise Linux product, SUSE Enterprise Linux 9, which now includes the 2.6 Linux kernel.

It was almost four years ago that I wrote my first column for ComputerWorld Canada, demonstrating how a Java servlet could display dynamic images using a database as its source.

The company has as a result halted all development activities at the centre.

Computer Associates International Inc. will turn to open-source software developers to help businesses migrate to its Ingres relational database software, it said Wednesday.

At its first ever meeting in Toronto, members of the governing body of the Java Community Process (JCP) had what it called a series of face-to-face meetings this week to discuss such things as the future of Java and the pace and complexity of development. Also on the agenda: examining ways that open source development in Java can continue without being inhibited by the JCP.
