Microsoft Creates New Strategic Missions And Tech Team

Microsoft’s Cloud + AI business has just undergone a reorganization, with current Azure executive vice president Jason Zander taking on a newly formed team called Strategic Missions and Technologies (SMT).

Zander will now report directly to CEO Satya Nadella, leading a team that aims to accelerate several of Microsoft’s leading emerging businesses.

The new SMT team will combine Microsoft’s U.S Federal business, Azure Space & Mission Engineering, Azure for Operators’ telecommunications business, and Azure Quantum.

The common goal shared by the teams in this new division is a next-generation opportunity that will create such a strong impact that each team deserves a dedicated focus to grow.

Zander’s previous position has been distributed internally to some of the company’s top people.

Scott Guthrie, executive vice president of cloud and AI, is creating a new team structure through Zander’s move. The Azure Core Team, responsible for core apps and infrastructure, will continue to be led by Girish Bablani. The Azure Dedicated Team, led by Eric Lockard, will move to the Azure Core Team.

The Azure Global Infrastructure Team will be subordinated to the Azure Core team.

There is a new Cloud for Industry and Global Expansion team led by Corey Sanders, who will own Microsoft’s vertical cloud platforms and will be tasked with hiring industry ISVs to build on the entire Microsoft cloud.

Rani Borkar, Head of Azure Hardware Systems & Infrastructure, is now part of Guthrie’s leadership team, along with Billy Anders, who leads the Azure CXP team, and Doug Phillips, who is now part of Guthrie’s leadership team, will lead the Azure Edge + Platform team.

Technical Fellow Mark Russinovich will continue to lead the Azure Office of the CTO team and will also join Guthrie’s leadership team.

Finally, Technical Fellow Henry Sanders will continue to serve as CTO of the Azure Edge + Platform team and will also serve under Guthrie’s leadership team.

The reorganization of the tech giant’s internal team comes into effect immediately.
