Apple’s Director Of Machine Learning Resigns Due To Return To Office Work

Apple’s director of machine learning Ian Goodfellow has announced plans to leave the company, partly due to Apple’s return to work policy.

In a note to staff announcing his resignation, Goodfellow said: “I strongly believe that more flexibility would have been the best policy for my team.”

Apple’s return to work policy requires employees to work at least one day a week from the office by April 11, at least two days a week by May 2, and at least three days a week by May 23.

Apple employees returned to Apple Park in April with the three-day in-office work policy being enacted on May 23. Despite the company’s plan to have them back in the office, Apple workers have expressed displeasure with such an initiative.

In the summer, some Apple employees explained why they wanted to continue working from home, pointing to the flexibility they have.

“Without the inclusivity that flexibility brings, many of us feel we have to choose between either a combination of our families, our well-being, and being empowered to do our best work, or being a part of Apple. This is a decision none of us take lightly, and a decision many would prefer not to have to make,” the Apple workers wrote in a letter to CEO Tim Cook.
