What A CIO Should Know: Brave New World

The seventh CIO Connect Annual Conference, “Brave New World – leadership and technology in transition,” will take place on Nov. 18-19 at the Radisson Edwardian New Providence Wharf Hotel, London Docklands, U.K. Keynote speakers include Stephen Attenborough, Commercial Director at Virgin Galactic and Dennis Turner, Chief Economist at HSBC.

As part of its “Sanity Savers” series, a video from TechRepublic offers 10 questions CIOs should ask themselves about their leadership abilities.

CIO Talk Radio hosted a marathon of cyber-security shows during the last three weeks of October, in cooperation with the National Association of State CIOs. These shows will be available afterwards on the “CIO Talk Radio” show Web site archives page, as streaming audio, or RSS feed.

In his blog “The Bivings Report,” Steve Peterson talks about the recent CIO Perspectives event in Washington DC and how CIOs could contribute to organizations in the journalism and publishing industry.

Research firm Gartner Inc. recently hosted its 2010 CIO Agenda talk, where Mark McDonald suggested that, even with strong increases in 2010, CIOs will face the future with essentially the same resource levels they had in 2006 or 2007.

Former CIO magazine editor Abbie Lundberg has launched Lundberg Media, a communications consultantcy that includes a blog with interviews of high-profile CIOs.

Last month a group in Austin, Tex. brought together CIOs for an invitation-only event that explored how to build an IT organization in a difficult economy.

A firm called Research and Markets has published a report called “Being a Strategic Enabler Ensures the CIO Role Remains Relevant,” which includes an action plan with steps to transform the IT department from a cost centre to a strategic enabler.

Over the first six months of 2009, the Information Officers Practice (IOP) at Russell Reynolds Associates conducted a series of interviews with CIOs to discuss common challenges. Details from the report have been published in Baseline magazine.

In his blog A CIO’s Voice, Arun Manansingh has written a post that offers a sort of mission statement of who CIOs are and how their role should be described.
