We all know what happened when HP bought Compaq, or when Oracle took over PeopleSoft. But those are just the deals that actually got done.

More often than not, consolidation in the vendor community starts out with a vague rumour, followed by increased predictions about the timing and value of a proposed transaction. While we remember the big transformations some of these unions caused in the IT industry, there are a slew of others that stopped just short of a handshake between the two CEOs.
