New Infineon chip to speed disk drives

Infineon Technologies AG is delivering what it claims to be the industry’s first hard-disk drive read-channel integrated circuit (IC) using 0.13-micron process technology, the company said in a statement Wednesday.

Read-channel ICs using 0.13-micron process technology are designed to achieve data transfer rates on a disk drive of 1.6G bps (bits per second) under worst case conditions. This is 40 per cent greater than currently available components, according to Infineon.

The first customer for Infineon’s new read-channel IC is IBM Corp., a company spokesman said. “We expect to announce other customers shortly,” he said.

The Munich, Germany, semiconductor maker said that read channels will help manufacturers keep pace with market demand for faster high-density drives used in enterprise data storage systems.
