Is Hadoop practical for the enterprise?

While it is immensely powerful, Hadoop is like many other open-source technologies, such as Linux and the R programming language, in that it is not designed specifically with business requirements in mind. As this article points out, the developers working on Hadoop are plenty dedicated, but the cost of infrastructure and training required for an enterprise to make Hadoop work can be substantial.

There are companies like Hortonworks and MapR that offer a more commercialized form of Hadoop, but at this point, the market is fairly small.
