EMC launches Dell co-manufactured storage array

EMC Corp. launched a midrange Fibre Channel storage array Monday for departments and workgroups within enterprises, which starts at a price that is affordable by most customers.

The Clariion CX200 storage array, which is manufactured by Dell Computer Corp. using patented technology from, has as much as 2.2TB of capacity and uses much of the same management software as EMC’s Symmetrix storage arrays.

EMC is trying to break into the midrange storage market, which is the fastest growing segment of the storage market. To do so, the company has to be able to release storage at a more inexpensive price point – as a result, it signed a deal with Dell to manufacture the CX200, calling on Dell’s manufacturing efficiencies in this area.

The CX200 can be either deployed in storage-area networks (SAN) or attached directly to servers that contain 2Gbps Fibre Channel adapters. It is rack-mountable and can scale from as few as five drives to as many as 30 in a 7U (12
