B.C. to hand out land titles online

The Government of British Columbia is embarking on a project to develop the capability of its Land Titles branch to accept the electronic filing of documents.

MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. (MDA) recently announced that it has been awarded a $4 million contract to undertake the project. When development is completed, a new Land Title e-filing service will be available from MDA through BC OnLine. The new service will provide a convenient, cost-effective alternative to filing over the counter at Land Title Offices, according to the province. It will also help streamline the conveyancing process in the province, making it easier to buy and sell property.

At present, BC OnLine offers a search capability for Land Titles. When the new e-filing system is complete, information will flow both ways. “E-filing presents an exciting business opportunity for our company,” said MDA president and CEO Dan Friedmann.

More than 30,000 registered business customers conduct over 5 million transactions each year through BC OnLine.
