Avaya releases new cloud services, collaboration tools

Communications software provider Avaya Inc. today released a suite of new cloud services and software aimed at boosting collaboration and communication in the midmarket and enterprise spaces.

The Avaya Aura Collaboration Environment is a new software platform that allows companies to embed collaboration and communication capabilities into business applications, according to Mark Monday, vice-president for the collaboration platform business unit at the Santa Clara, Calif.-based firm.

He said the Aura Collaboration Environment makes it easy for app developers to tailor collaboration applications to support “virtually any role, task or vertical.” The platform serves as “single-purpose” solution for voice, video and email and eliminates the need for developers to have specialized communications knowledge in order to embed collaboration and communication features into an app or sequence of applications which includes social, mobile and cloud apps.

“Collaboration Environment removes the complexity of combining business applications and collaboration capabilities,” he said. “For example, a healthcare patient monitoring system can automatically trigger a collaboration session between several doctors based on the vital signs of a critical care patient that is being monitored 24/7.”

Also released today was Avaya Messaging Service. AMS is s a real-time mobile collaboration and communication cloud service for any size of business. The service can be used in any vendor’s platform

SMS and text messages are typically operated as an application independent of enterprise commuications and usually sent from one mobile device to another.

AMS extends SMS messages to and from smart phones, tablets, networks and desktop devices. This enables users to use one number only for communication via text messaging, said Monday.

“Users can effectively use their desktop phone number as a textable phone number,” he said.

Also unveiled today was Avaya IP Office 9.0, a midmarket business collaboration tool that delivers collaboration features across voice, video and mobility.

The IP Office 9.0 software can now easily scale to 2,000 users (up from 1,000 users with the previous model) at up to 32 locations. Users also have the option of deploying IP Office 9.0 as virtualized software to enable deployment in a customer-supplied data centre running VMware VSphere 4.x of 5.x software.

IP Office software as an open virtual application (OVA) can run inside a virtual machine, on a dedicated server, an application or a combination of these. It Web Manager for Server Edition comes with a consolidated management view of a multi-site IP Office solution through a one-time long-in to a single URL.
