Twitter to make free write-only API available to bots that provide valuable content

Elon Musk has announced that Twitter will provide a free write-only Application Programming Interface (API) for bots that provide useful content to the microblogging platform.

“In response to feedback, Twitter will enable a light, write-only API for bots providing good, free content,” Musk tweeted.

Twitter previously announced that, beginning February 9, it will no longer provide free access to its API in favor of launching a paid version. Elon Musk stated days before the deadline that Twitter will provide a write-only API for “bots providing good content that is free” after receiving feedback from developers. However, it is unknown what Musk considers to be good content.

Twitter previously blocked third-party API access, claiming that they violated a “long-standing rule” without providing any details. The company then quietly updated its developer terms to state that the app cannot “create or attempt to create a substitute or similar service or product to the Twitter Applications.”

Meanwhile, Twitter has told businesses that they must pay $1,000 per month to keep their gold badges, and brands and organizations that do not pay will lose their checkmarks. Twitter is also busy monetising its platform in various ways and will charge an additional $50 per month to add badges to each account affiliated with the brand, according to The Information.
