Delta Airlines launches in-flight free WiFi

Delta AirLines will begin offering free Wi-Fi on most of its domestic flights in February, CEO Ed Bastian announced at the CES technology trade show.

By the end of the year, the airline plans to outfit more than 700 planes with high-speed, satellite-based broadband service from T-Mobile, and by the end of 2024, it plans to expand free Wi-Fi to international and Delta Connection flights.

“At work, at home and everywhere in between, connectivity is essential to daily life, and your journey on Delta should be no different,” said Delta CEO Ed Bastian at CES 2023 in Las Vegas. “Our vision has long been to deliver an experience at 30,000 feet that feels close to what our customers have available on the ground.”

“We didn’t just want free Wi-Fi to offer base-level service — we wanted it to be transformative for the entire onboard experience,” said Bastian. “It is imperative all customers onboard can enjoy their favorite content just as they would at home, and we’ve put this system through meticulous tests to make that possible.”

Customers must have an account in Delta’s SkyMiles frequent-flyer program, which is free to join, in order to use the Wi-Fi service. Passengers can connect an unlimited number of devices to the in-flight Wi-Fi. More than 500 planes will have free service beginning February 1.
