Boeing, Roblox expand to Metaverse

Aircraft manufacturer Boeing, online gaming platform Roblox Corp and other platforms are exploring ways to design aircraft digitally and other digital activities in Metaverse.

According to Susan Doniz, Boeing’s Chief Information Officer, the company is turning to digital technology to speed up production of new aircraft, citing how the company reduced the development time of the T-7 trainer jet by 80% to three years as an example of what might be possible for commercial planes.

On the negative side, some employees have expressed reservations about the tools provided by Boeing, such as Microsoft’s HoloLens mixed-reality headsets, which allow planes to be wired with digital manuals in front of them, which they say are unsatisfactory.

According to Morgan McGuire, Roblox’s chief scientist, Roblox is planning “digital twins” of the real world and its problems, both good and bad, which is attracting nearly 60 million daily users to its site to play and build games.
