Users get control portal for IBM SmartCloud

A Web-based, self-service interface recently added to IBM’s enterprise cloud computing product SmartCloud, will enable end user to provision cloud storage from their computer screens.

The new SmartCloud Storage Access tool will help organizations save time and improve productivity, IBM said, because it will transfer the provisioning tasks traditionally handled by IT administrators to end user.

Storage provisioning typically takes hours or even days to complete. With this upgrade, administrators’ time can be freed up because individual users can configure the software to add storage capacity, request more capacity and even access and manage files by themselves, according to IBM.

IT administrators don’t lose control though. They can still set up policy-driven processes, create storage classes to determine which drives certain data should be stored, define service catalogues and control the use of storage across the system.
Administrators can set capacity threshold warnings and will also be able to monitor end users activity and cloud use history.
