UK Police arrest LulzSec teen in Shetland Islands raid

British police have announced the arrest of an 18 year old man described as being ‘Topiary’, the mouthpiece of the prolific LulzSec hacking group and famous for his droll Twitter feed.

The as-yet unidentified man was arrested at home in the Shetland Islands, a remote part of the United Kingdom more associated with oil and sheep than Internet crime. He has now been transported to London.

The address of a second individual in Lincolnshire was also raided as part of the same investigation, the Police Central e-Crime Unit (PCeU) said, and a 17 year old “interviewed under caution in connection with the inquiry. He has not been arrested.”

“Today’s operation is linked to PCeU’s ongoing investigation into network intrusions and Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks against a number of international business and intelligence agencies by what is believed to be the same hacking group,” the official release said.

LulzSec has been associated with a long list of DDoS and other attacks against a range of organisations it dislikes, including most recently, News International and its newspaper The Sun.

Sometimes described as the group’s ‘second in command’, Topiary is best described as the voice of LulzSec, the individual who spoke for the group on its avidly-consumed Twitter feed.
