Telus gives HP Canada an e-biz boost

Telus Enterprise Solutions and Hewlett-Packard Canada announced Monday a three-year service deal that will expand e-business hosting solutions to HP customers nationwide.

Calgary-based Telus said that it will supply its Web-hosting services and expand support for Hewlett Packard’s HP-UX operating system across Canada. As Telus’ preferred Intel-Windows NT supplier, HP will provide its hardware infrastructure throughout Telus’ Internet Data centres, including its new Calgary and Toronto locations.

According to John Seliga, vice-president of hosting services at Telus in Calgary, Canadian companies are increasingly turning to hosting service providers rather than trying to manage their own infrastructure.

“Under this agreement we become a certified service provider for HP solutions – effectively we will be the hosting provider for HP’s server equipment for its customer base and for net new customers in Canada,” Seliga said.

Although Telus has previously hosted HP services, this announcement marks a “tighter relationship” with HP, Seliga said. The deal makes Telus the first Canadian company under HP’s Service Provider Plan, a marketing initiative designed to raise awareness for joint HP and service provider solutions.

“Telus and HP have a shared vision of pervasive mobile computing as well as a vision on managed application services. This agreement is a manifestation of that common belief in the marketplace,” said Joseph Belsanti, e-services manager at Hewlett-Packard (Canada) in Mississauga, Ont.

The program is a co-selling, co-marketing relationship, Belsanti said, and both companies have a common agreement for how these services manifest themselves in the Canadian marketplace.

“This is a formal commitment that HP will become a standard offering in our datacenters and HP will promote Telus as a preferred hosting provider within Canada,” Seliga said.

“We are seeing a strong ‘uptech’ in the hosting marketplace and we wanted to work with HP they have strong products and very strong channels and relationships that we want to take advantage of. Through this agreement there are additional incentives to HP sales representatives to put their customers in a hosted environment with a service provider like Telus.”
