Industry group releases wireless IM spec

Supporters of the Wireless Village initiative unveiled Version 1.0 of their specification for the interoperability of mobile instant messaging and presence services (IMPS) on Wednesday.

The open specification allows devices such as mobile phones, PDAs (personal digital assistants) and PCs to exchange instant messages and use presence services that can, for example, keep track of the online status and availability of chat partners, the Wireless Village group said in a statement.

Nokia Corp., Motorola Inc. and L.M. Ericsson Telephone Co. established the joint project last April with the objective of defining and promoting a set of universal specifications for mobile instant messaging and presence services.

The specification can take advantage of such diverse transport technologies as SMS (Short Message Service), WAP (Wireless Application Protocol), and HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol) regardless of platform or manufacturer, the companies said. They expect device manufacturers, application developers, wireless operators and portal operators will be able to use the specification to introduce compliant commercial products and services within the year.
