Firms mesh offerings

Managed Web hosting company Conxion Corp. is expanding the range of security services it offers customers with integrated firewall and VPN products from NetScreen Technologies Inc.

Conxion formally announced its partnership with NetScreen this month. NetScreen sells ASIC-based security systems and appliances that are designed specifically to handle secure transactions, enabling them to accelerate encryption and firewall functions.

Conxion is integrating the NetScreen products into its managed services architecture, said Phil Simmonds, senior director of product marketing at Conxion. He said the NetScreen appliances will provide managed hosting customers with a rugged, high-performance choice when it comes to security.

“The software that is embedded in [the NetScreen] hardware runs much faster than a traditional piece of firewall software that runs on a computer,” Simmonds said.

He said customers are looking for security products that can maintain high throughput levels for a variety of applications. “In our case, these are enterprise businesses that really wanted a performance uplift in the firewall access.”

Borland Software has been using managed hosting services, including NetScreen security, from Conxion to host its software development platform called TeamSource. TeamSource was launched in November to give geographically dispersed software developers a place to collaborate.

Pat Kerpan, vice-president and general manager of Team Source, said high-performance security from NetScreen is a key to offering the TeamSource platform.

“Partners like Conxion with their data centres and NetScreen with its specialized appliance approach for high performance – those are critical components of putting in place an infrastructure that allows people to use the Internet as a platform for work,” he said.

Conxion has integrated the NetScreen-100 and NetScreen-500 products into its offerings, Simmonds said. The products are available immediately. NetScreen-100 is priced at US$2,895 per month and provides firewall throughput of 200Mbps, Simmonds said. Pricing for the NetScreen-500 is US$7,895 per month. It provides throughput of 700Mbps. Conxion will provide 24×7 monitoring of the NetScreen products, Simmonds said.
