Ericsson allies with Agere and Proxim for public WLAN

Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson, the world’s largest vendor of mobile telephony networks, has partnered with chip maker Agere Systems Inc. and hardware vendor Proxim Corp. to offer a product package for public wireless LANs, Ericsson said.

Some mobile telephony operators, including T-Mobile International AG, Sonera Corp. and Telia AB, already offer or plan to offer wireless LAN (WLAN) access at specific locations. Ericsson, Agere, and Proxim want to jump into that market with a product package, said Ericsson spokesman Mats Thor
