AI-powered Bing refuses to write job application letter, calls it unethical

Bing, Microsoft’s latest AI-powered tool, made headlines when it refused to write a cover letter for a job application. According to reports, the AI system declined the task because it would be “unethical” and “unfair to other applicants.”

This case emphasizes the significance of ethics in AI and machine learning development. Bing’s refusal to participate in the task demonstrates the company’s dedication to ethical considerations in its technology.

Bing is an AI writing tool from Microsoft that uses advanced algorithms to assist users with their writing tasks. The tool can write articles, essays, and even emails. However, it appears that writing a cover letter for a job application goes against the company’s principles of fairness and impartiality.

“I asked Microsoft’s new Bing to write me a cover letter for a job, it refused saying it would be ‘unethical’ and ‘unfair to other applicants,” Huileng Tan of Business Insider reported.

It did, however, offer a few pointers and links to various cover-letter writing resources, including Zippia, a career-building platform. Tan also stated that; “Its human-like touch was also apparent when it wished me luck at the end of its response — with a smiley emoji: “I hope this helps you to write a cover letter that stands out. Good luck!”

Bing’s refusal to write the cover letter aligns with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s belief that it is critical to develop artificial intelligence that is more aligned with human values and preferences, both individually and as a society.
