A relative latecomer to the cloud game, Oracle seems to be gearing up for a showdown with Amazon for public cloud customers.
According to this ComputerWorld article, at the OpenWorld conference in San Fransisco on Sept. 30, CEO Larry Ellison said Amazon will be Oracle's primary competitor when it rolls out its new IaaS offerings. As well as public cloud services, Oracle will provide a
private cloud Ellison says is "identical," only within your own data centre, according to the article.
It's quite interesting to hear Ellison's remarks defending cloud computing when in the not-too-distant past he had scoffed at the hype surounding it. He's still saying the same things: essentially, that cloud computing isn't a new or revolutionary technology (in fact, he reportedly called it a "utility model that has been with us for 100 years or more.") But whether it's old or new technology, or just a matter of semantics, Oracle is now doing "cloud."
