IBM Corp. is offering more processing power for its top-end enterprise servers.
The company announced the availability of the Power 7+ chip, which will run at up to 4.4 GHz, according to this NetworkWorld article. It has also boosted the memory cache on the chips to 80 MB from 32 MB on Power7 machines. The article quotes the CTO of IBM
Power Systems, Satya Sharma, as saying the changes will mean a nearly 40 per cent performance boost for Java applications.
Power Systems are high-performance servers used extensively for rapid processing of analytics or database queries. The massively parallel CPU architecture is used for tasks such as detecting insurance fraud.
While IBM will incorporate the new chips into the higer-priced Power servers, such as the 770 and 780, it won't be available for the 795, which runs on UNIX. But the Power 7+ processor will eventually show up on cheaper machines, IBM says.
