Listen up, and don

I remember the first conversation I had with my first boss when I went to work for him as a programmer. I remember like it was yesterday. Ok, so maybe I don’t remember so clearly his exact words, and maybe I dreamed a large part of the conversation, but I do seem to remember the things he told me that first day, and what he said applied then, and they still apply today.

Here’s what he said (give or take a little artistic license) when I walked into his office for the first time:

“Well, hello there soldier, and welcome to my IT shop. Sit down, have a drink. What’s the matter – never seen a CIO in a crew cut and camouflage before? No, you don’t have to salute, but you do have to pay close attention.
