IT spendings up, CIOs say

IT spending projections for 2006 continue to improve after a dip last fall, according to the monthly CIO Magazine Tech Poll released Monday. CIOs are now predicting that their IT spending will increase by 7.8 per cent over the next 12 months, up from predictions in November that it would rise 5.7 per cent this year. CIOs in October had projected that IT spending in 2006 would rise by 5.2 per cent.

Microsoft to invest $1.7 billion in India

Microsoft Corp. will invest US$1.7 billion in India over the next four years, Chairman and Chief Architect Bill Gates said Wednesday in Delhi. The funds will be spent on Microsoft's development operations in India and other areas in line with the company's strategic vision for India, Gates told reporters in Delhi. Microsoft joins several other multinational technology companies, such as Intel Corp. and Cisco Systems Inc., which are making large investments in India in anticipation of a boom in the country's IT and communications markets.

When viewing the business as customer is not enough

To regard the business as a customer -- the customer -- of the IT department is a sensible practice, with one exception: handling the strategic aspects of information technology requires an approach and attitude beyond what is generally recognized in IT as serving the needs of the business.
