Veritas Software Corp. served up an upgrade for the rapid recovery feature of its product for the Microsoft Exchange environment. The company also announced tighter integration for two of its software products.
The company’s Edition for Microsoft Exchange 2000 is designed to provide organizations with an automated approach to data recovery and protection from data corruption or virus problems. By utilizing its FlashSnap technology, the solution allows for a “snapshot back-up of the data, (and) it takes another mirror of the data,” said Craig Andrews, Canadian technical director at Veritas in Toronto. The rapid recovery component allows for the recovery of the data to take place via these snapshots so that even if the database is corrupted, the data can be restored from those snapshots already on disk. As Andrews further explained, this process allows for the data to be copied onto tape.
Additionally, there is more integration from Exchange to the company’s NetBackup and Backup Exec software, which enables an off-host snapshot back-up and recovery, accomplished again through its FlashSnap technology. And the integration could prove useful for storage area network managers and the like.
“As a back-up administrator you can just click on a icon within either of the two programs and say you want to do a back-up of my Exchange server and it will automatically communicate with the Exchange Edition to make that happen,” he said.
Veritas is also pursuing the on-demand or utility computing model that the company says it offers through its heterogeneous software. “With the Exchange edition, the ability to do online back-up essentially fits into the utility idea because you can now do back-ups without having to shut down the server or consume CPU cycles,” he said.
