Dell adds new switch to lineup

Dell Inc. has upgraded its PowerConnect line with the addition of the PowerConnect 5324, a 24-port managed gigabit Layer 2 switch.

The new switch includes advanced VLAN (virtual LAN) support, cable diagnostics for improved troubleshooting, and advanced quality of service capabilities. Standards-based Web and command line interface tools, along with Dell OpenManage Network Manager, help users configure multiple PowerConnect switches deployed across a network.

For larger enterprises, the new switch has increased security through management access profiles for more administrative control and enhanced 802.1x wireless support, said Larry Hart, senior product manager for Dell’s PowerConnect line. Smaller organizations and departments can use the advanced VLAN support and advanced cable diagnostics to improve troubleshooting and advanced quality of service capabilities in the switch to more efficiently manage network traffic, he said.

“Our goal is to bring standards-based networking into the networking switch space, and we’re continuing to do that with this product,” he said.

The new switch has 24 copper gigabit Ethernet ports and four small form factor pluggable slots. The new switch replaces the PowerConnect 5200, is priced starting at US$1,299, and is available this week.
