A Romanian national has pleaded guilty in a court in southern England to fraud after Somerset police arrested him with data skimmed from some 9,000 automated teller machine cards. Leonid Rotaru, 32, was wanted elsewhere in the U.K for other crimes.
His conviction comes on the heels of a publicity campaign by police in Queensland, Australia,educating shoppers about the appearance of skimmers -- all-in-one devices that steal stripe information and record personal identification number information -- at shopping centres during the holiday season. Aussie police note that since the presence of a skimmer is ine effect a crime in progress, users who spot one should dial the Australian equivalent of 911.
