Hewlett Packard Development Company LP’s US$2.7 billion offer to acquire 3Com Corp. is the latest in a series of mergers that could directly affect network managers.

HP already makes switches through its ProCurve division, and wants to get higher end core switches, plus intrusion prevention systems, by acquiring 3Com. The move comes on the heels of Cisco Systems Inc.’s offer to buy Tandberg SA, and Avaya Inc.’s bid for the enterprise assets of 3Com.

The HP Procurve is a far better switch in the field then the 3COM switch when your talking on enterprise levels. Also, with the new Procurve chassis coming out the backplanes are finally rivaling makers like Cisco and Extreme. Also, their accusation of Colubris was a bigger splash then this potential accusation because it gave them a big advantage in the wireless market Cisco because the integration of the controllers into their Procurve chassis (plus there modification [soon not sure if this is actually done yet] of Colubris's static license amount to dynamic license amount.

The only company I work with their equipment in this story is Tandberg so removing commenting on that none of these seem like big stories to me.
