IN BRIEF: McAfee wraps MX Logic buy

McAfee will pay up to $170 million for the cloud-based service. Plus, VM6 joins Microsoft's virtual ecosystem, Fortinet releases a new endpoint solution, and Hostway announces new virtual servers

McAfee Inc. announced Tuesday that it has wrapped up its US $140-million purchase of MX Logic Inc., a provider of cloud-based e-mail security and continuity services.

In addition to the $140-million price tag, an earn-out of up to an additional $30 million could be added to the deal if certain performance goals are reached.

“With this transaction, McAfee is uniquely positioned to offer the most comprehensive cloud-based security portfolio in the industry — one that combines leading global threat intelligence technologies from McAfee with its security-as-a-service solutions,” said Marc Olesen, senior vice-president and general manager at McAfee in a press release.

He added that customers will better be able to take advantage of the cloud to handle their e-mail security needs.

VM6 teams with Microsoft

VM6 Software Inc. is teaming up with Microsoft Corp. to push VM6 Virtual Machine ex Server software into the Redmond, Wash. giant’s virtualization ecosystem.

The partnership means that VM6 VMex software will be promoted through Microsoft’s marketing activities, according to VM6 Inc.

VM6 VMex works with Microsoft’s Hyper-V and System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 to help build an internal cloud that can manage virtual environments without the need for costly hardware or storage area networks.

“VM6 VMex was designed to allow CIOs to address cost and manageability issues of ROBO (remote office, branch office) and SMB IT infrastructures,” said Claude Goudreault, founder and CEO of VM6 in a news release. “By combining Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V virtualization technology and VM6 VMex high availability technology, companies are now able to bring the benefits of virtualization to their distributed IT environments without complexity and at one fifth of the cost of alternative solutions.”

He added that his company’s work with Microsoft will give CIOs greater assurance about virtualization and lead to more adoption of the technology outside of the main data centre.

Fortinet releases two versions of FortiClient 4.1

The latest version of Fortinet Inc.’s FortiClient Endpoint Protection Suite is available in premium edition or freeware form. Both versions include consolidated security and automatic updates, but the freeware is a standard and unmanaged version.

“Fortinet is helping to minimize the infestation of networks by removing the cost barriers that prevent consumers from deploying appropriate protection, especially as the lines between work and home computers are ever blurring,” states the company in a press release.

The key benefit of FortiClient 4.1, according to Fortinet, is its modular functionality. The product can provide either broad protection for laptops and PCs or be modularly implemented with other dedicated security products.
