Acquisition gives Cisco a multi-tenant distributed virtual network controller, which it says will be incorporated into its product line

Cisco Systems Inc. has quietly announced the purchase of a California company called vCider, which specializes in the development of virtual network overlay technology for secure data centre infrastructure. Usually acquisitions are announced in a press release, but this came in a blog.

As this story in Network Computing outlines, vCider's technology is similar to that of Nicira's, which was bought by EMC last month for US$1.2 billion.

An industry analyst suggests Cisco's move is a way of signalling that it won't give up trying to become a leader in the emerging software-defined networking space.

The battle over the best way to achieve network virtualization is only just begining.
