Ciena showcases SDN, high-speed optics

Optical networking gear that enables transmission speeds which scale from 100 Gigabit per second to 400 Gb/s and software defined networking (SDN) solutions were among the products demonstrated by networking equipment maker Ciena Corp. at its Vector Summit 2013 in Ottawa last week.

Ciena holds the Vector Summit to showcase is products and emerging technologies to the company’s customers. Representatives from 140 companies from around the world came to the event at Ciena’s research and development facilities.

Ciena’s 6500 Packet-Optical platform equipped with the company’s third generation software-programmable WaveLogic Coherent optical processors will enable service providers to speed up delivery of software-defined networking to their customers, according to James Frodsham, chief strategy office of Ciena.

“WaveLogic 3 allows network operators to constantly monitor optical transmission performance and enables them to rapidly respond to network demand spikes,” he said.

Frodsham said, WaveLogic 3 has a wide range of applications including low latency over metro, ultra-long haul or trans-Pacific submarine distances and capable of speeds that scale from 100Gb/s to 400 Gb/s..

“WaveLogic 3 can carry multiple 100G payloads in metro and regional environments doubling the capacity of current 100G networks,” he said. “With this technology, service providers can meet networking demands as they grow over the next few years.”

On June 19, Canadian ultra-high-speed research network CANARIE, deployed Ciena’s 6500 Packet Optical platform and WaveLogic 3 processors to support its 100G upgrade and network expansion of a route connecting Montreal and New York.

CANARIE provides the fibre optic backbone that connects provincial and territorial research networks in Canada and to other networks around the world.

The upgrade will allow the network to sustain the big data streams that current academic and scientific research demand and enable it to handle data-intensive transmission. For instance, Frodsham said, the 100G link can allow a full two-hour HD video to download in 4/10ths of a second.

Also featured at Vector was Ciena’s OpenFlow 1.3 packet networking technology and the company’s OneConnect intelligent control panel which enables policy-based control of wide area networks.

Ciena said network operators using OneConnect are able to achieve 40 per cent bandwidth savings and 30 per cent latency reduction in highly meshed networks.
