Nokia Corp. on Wednesday said its open-source mobile Web browser is now available. It also launched a new portal to share information about its open-source activities. The browser, now available to licensees of S60 3rd Edition, is based on the WebCore and JavaScriptCore components of Apple Computer Inc.'s Safari Web kit. Safari, Apple's browser, is based on KHTML and KDE's JavaScript Engine, developed as part of KDE's Konquerer open-source project.

Qualcomm accused of unfair conduct in EU

Six leading mobile telecommunications vendors have filed complaints to the European Commission charging Qualcomm Inc. with anticompetitive behaviour. They say Qualcomm isn't adhering to the agreement it made when it contributed its patents to the WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access ) standard. WCDMA was approved by most European regulators for use in 3G (third-generation) mobile networks.

Orange targets businesses with new Windows devices

Orange SA added two new Windows Mobile 5.0 products to its line of devices geared toward business users, the company said. The SPV C600 smart phone and the SPV M3000 PDA (personal digital assistant) both operate on Orange's EDGE (Enhanced Data for GSM Evolution) networks, which deliver up to 247K bps of throughput. The Windows Mobile 5.0 software on both devices allows users to synch email with Microsoft Outlook. The SPV M3000 also includes Wi-Fi, a camera and a camcorder.

BT plans Fusion boosts for 2006

British Telecommunications PLC plans to sell 20 different converged Wi-Fi and cellular phone models next year as part of its BT Fusion service, an executive said on Wednesday during the Smartphone Show in London. BT also has other plans to expand the service and has a keen eye on the competition.
