Intel Corp. will be using a new Atom microprocessor code-named Bay Trail, as the architecture for future Pentium and Celeron chips designed for low-end laptops, desktops and all-in-one computers.
The move points to a growing reliance of Intel on its Atom architecture for entry-level computing.
Bay Trail is based on an architecture which Intel claims to be up to three times faster and five times more power efficient than older Atom cores.
That new architecture, called Silvermont, will be used by Intel on upcoming a new smartphone chip codenamed Merrifield which is expected to ship next year.

Because of the flexibility of the Silvermonth micro architecture, Intel can customize Bay Trail’s feature sets to develop Bay trail variants for devices at varying price points, according to the company.
