A guide to encrypting portable devices

In less than a year there government departments have reported three major losses of portable devices with unencrypted personal data.

Apparently individuals ignored departmental policies in each case that required data to be encrypted.

Assuming your employer has an encryption policy for portable devices with personal data – you do know, don’t you? — what about protecting the hardware we own?

PC World’s Alex Castle has a piece on encrypting hard drives, USB drives and Internet traffic that’s worth looking into.

Encryption isn’t that hard. But it does take realization that if you are carrying around company data on a personal device — and with corporate BYOD spreading that’s increasingly likely — you should be taking extra precautions.
