Intel Corp. is exploring ways to tailor its server chips to handle big data workloads.

Employing a combination of hardware and software enhancements, the microprocessor builder is investigating how its chips can perform better is areas such as predictive analytics, cloud data gathering and specific task processing, said Ron Kasabian, general manager of big data solutions at Intel.

Server manufacturers are already customizing servers to deal with big data workload. Improvements at the chip level and instruction-set level could further accelerate task execution, he said.

Intel’ strategy involves developing accelerators or cores for big data computation.

For instance, the company is working with Bocom, a Chinese company, to implement the Smart City project which attempts to solve counterfeit license plate problems in China by correlating plates, car makes and models. The project involves sending images through server gates ways. One way that Intel is helping out is by enhancing chips to improve the capability to decode video.

Intel is also focusing on providing the right software tools for data centres. Earlier the company released its own distribution of Hadoop and now it is looking more closely at analytics.
