Italian DVD maker hit with lawsuit from Toshiba

Toshiba filed a lawsuit last week against an Italian DVD replicator, ACME SpA, alleging the company is manufacturing and selling DVDs without a licence.

ACME hasn’t licensed patents from Toshiba or the DVD6C Licensing Group that acts as a one-stop shop for DVD patents from nine companies, Toshiba said late last week.

Through filing to the District Court of Milan’s IP Chamber, Toshiba is hoping to secure money from ACME and an agreement to respect Toshiba’s intellectual property rights in the future.

The lawsuit isn’t the first such filed by Toshiba. It sued a U.S. importer and wholesaler of DVD products in 2005 and this year brought cases against 17 manufacturers and importers of DVD products. It also filed a lawsuit against a German DVD replicator in July this year.
