Once it became clear that mobile devices were the future of business connectivity there was quickly no shortage of vendors making mobile device management applications.
Another joined has joined the fray with the release of Oracle Mobile Security Suite.
Oracle’s said the suite, along with its existing identity and access solutions, deliver an integrated platform from which organizations can manage access to all applications from all devices.
The suite is made up of a number of components from Oracle acquisitions, such as its 2013 purchase of Bitzer Mobile, which makes a secure container and the BMAX Gateway, which now becomes the suite’s access server.
“Oracle Mobile Security Suite brings the strength of Oracle’s Identity Management platform to mobile devices, and as a result helps organizations address the BYOD challenge with a logical approach,” Amit Jasuja, Oracle’s senior vice president of Java and Identity Management. “By extending security and access capabilities to mobile devices, organizations can protect corporate resources on employee devices without compromising the user experience.”
The solution goes up against on-premise or cloud applications like BlackBerry’s BES, IBM’s Fiberlink, MobileIron, SOTI MobiControl, AirWatch, SAP Afaria and a multitude of others.
Oracle already had a foot in the mobile door. Its Mobile Cloud Service allows IT to manage mobile APIs, while its Identity Management suite secures mobile apps.
The new Oracle Mobile Suite allows IT administrators to create a secure workspace on devices for separating enterprise apps from personal data and enforcing security policies.
The company says the workspace provides a complete mobile application solution including single sign-on, per application network tunneling, encryption for stored data, native integration with Microsoft Active Directory for shared-drive access, a corporate application catalog and a wrapping tool to include bespoke or COTS applications into the workspace.
Controls include geo-fencing, to limit access or restrict functionality based on location; application policy control, such as limiting copy/paste/print to prevent data loss; per application secure networking for data confidentiality, without battery draining device level VPNs; and efficient local data encryption with support for remote wiping of enterprise data and apps when a user is terminated.
The solution includes an email client, secure browser, file manager, white pages app, document editor, and a mobile app catalog that can serve as an app store, Oracle said. With embedded single sign-on (SSO) and pluggable authentication with support for PKI and Kerberos, users sign-on once with their enterprise credential for access to data and apps.
Linking back to Oracle [Nasdaq: ORCL] identity and management applications lets organizations leverage the fraud detection, governance and compliance and user life-cycle management on mobile devices.
