Oracle upgrades Eclipse free plug-in pack

Oracle on Thursday upgraded Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse 11g, which is a set of free plug-ins for Eclipse IDE users to build Java EE and Web services applications for the Oracle Fusion Middleware platform .

Featured in the release, which is numbered as version 11.1.1.4, are capabilities for Oracle WebLogic application server that enable developers to reduce the number of code cycles and increase quality by catching errors at design time.

A WebLogic Server JMS (Java Message Service) deployment descriptor helps streamline authoring of JMS configuration files. The release also offers Oracle’s AppXRay , a Java development tool for design time dependency analysis and visualization. The tool better enables developers to work in a team setting, reduces runtime debugging, and improves code quality, Oracle said.

“With the new AppXRay feature, Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse provides a means to easily visualize the complex dependencies of your application, resulting in higher quality code and faster development time. Innovations such as AppXRay underline Oracle’s continued commitment to provide tools and frameworks to enable developers to build, test, and optimize Java and open source applications,” said Ted Farrell, chief architect and senior vice president of tools and middleware at Oracle, in a statement released by the company.

FastSwap development capabilities, used in combination with AppXray, allow changes to Java classes without requiring redeployment, Oracle said.

Other features in the release include WYSIWIG Web page editing, Service Component Architecture support, JAX-WS Web service validation, an integrated tag and data palette, and smart editors.

Oracle also has supported developers using its JDeveloper Java development tool and, with its acquisition of Sun Microsystems, now has jurisdiction over the NetBeans IDE that has rivaled Eclipse. The company has expressed intentions to continue development of NetBeans.

The upgrade to Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse 11g is currently available.
