In a campaign to get consumers to switch to Windows mobile devices, Microsoft Corp. is tempting iPhone users to trade-in their old smart phones for a $200 gift card.
The Trade-in your iPhone, Get a min. $200 gift card offer is valid from September 27 to November 3 and is available in select Microsoft retail stores in Canada, the United States and Puerto Rico.
“Bring your gently used iPhone 4S or iPhone 5 and get a minimum of a $200 gift cart to the Microsoft store,” an announcement on the company’s Web site said.
The gift card can be used towards the purchase of a Wndows phone. Among the handsets mentioned in the announcement were: the Nokia Lumia 1020; Lumia 928; Lumia 920; Lumia 620; and Lumia 520.
Earlier, Microsoft made a similar offer to iPad users offering to replaced “gently used iPad 2,3 or 4 tablets for a minimum of a $200 gift card which could be used to “upgrade” to a Surface RT or Surface Pro tablet.
That offer goes from September 5, until October 27.
The trade-in campaign is likely a tough sell.
According to a report on the technology publication, Computerworld.com, the research firm 451 Research found in a survey of 4,000 smart phone users in March this year, that 40 per cent of them intends to buy an iPhone.
