ChatGPT allows disabling of chat history

OpenAI has made several improvements to its ChatGPT language model in response to rising demand from privacy campaigners and government agencies.

Notably, following Italy’s ban on the AI chatbot, it is now enabling customers to deactivate conversation history. Previous conversations, however, will be stored and available to OpenAI’s AI models. In order to deter misuse, these conversation logs will be kept for 30 days before being removed.

Users must visit to the settings menu to opt out of chat history logging however, this change will only apply to future discussions. Previous interactions will be available to OpenAI’s AI models for training purposes across several products. Regardless of whether the user chooses to disable chat history, ChatGPT will continue to record and keep conversations for 30 days. According to OpenAI, this is done to detect instances of potential misuse and guarantees users that the records will be completely removed after this period.

ChatGPT users may obtain their logged data for transparency by using the “export data” option. This option allows users to get an email providing a file containing all of the data accessible to OpenAI’s AI models. OpenAI also intends to create a feature that allows users to log conversation history without having it used for training, it will only be available through the premium ChatGPT Business subscription. This option’s release date and price have yet to be announced.
