Cogeco Data Services announces three-hour SLA

Cogeco Data Services Inc., formerly known at Toronto Hydro Telecom, announced Tuesday it is committing itself to a three-hour response time to restore network outages.

As of September 1, the wide-area network service provider said its service level agreement guarantees its managed metropolitan Ethernet and managed wavelength customers that if they report a network problem, it will be restored within three hours. Otherwise, Cogeco will “credit” the customer, according to a company press release.

Cogeco Cable Inc. of Oakville, Ont. bought Toronto Hydro Telecom for $200 million in June, 2008 and re-named the operation Cogeco Data Services.

Before it was acquired by Cogeco,Toronto Hydro Telecom launched Managed Wavelength nearly three years ago to help customers combine different types of traffic on to one fibre network using dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM).

In addition to private lines, the company offers hosted storage and security services, plus wide-area networking over fibre lines taking advantage of Toronto Hydro electrical rights-of-way.

The company’s customers include both the public sector and financial services.

In late 2008Cogeco Data Services announced a $39 million contract to provide bandwidth at 1 Gigabit per second to Toronto District School Board. The board’s 600 schools have a 1 Gbps connection to other schools and a 40 Gbps connection to the board office’s data centre.

The City of Toronto has two separate contracts with Cogeco Data Services to connect its offices at 1 Gbps and its data centres at 20 Gbps.

One financial services customer is Alpha Trading Systems Ltd., which is using Cogeco Data Services for its network to execute securities trades.
