Shunra boosts distributed apps development

Looking to help developers find code issues early, Shunra Software Ltd. on Wednesday introduced Shunra/Stratus 2.0, which provides performance unit testing for distributed application code.

The release is intended to provide for unit testing under accurate, true-to-life network conditions, according to the company. It features a network emulation technology to let developers gauge how their application modules perform in a production environment. Developers can record and playback the production environment directly from their desktops. Version 2.0 also allows for collaboration.

Stratus supports distributed development teams and offshore or outsourced developers, who can develop to specifications of the actual production network over which the application will be deployed.

The product is intended to accommodate the increasing complexities of distributed applications, according to the company.

“What the product does is help developers deal with the distributed applications issue in a production environment,” said David Hochhauser, vice-president of marketing at Shunra.

“From one location, they can now test out that distributed application,” he said. The product utilizes Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) to access network control and management information without the use of agents.

Also featured in Version 2.0 are the use of floating licenses and a hosted version, in which Shunra can host network scenarios for users. Stratus is suitable for applications such as e-business, ERP and CRM, according to Shunra.

Pricing begins at US$5,000 for five users.
