PeopleSoft to launch mobile synchronization

PeopleSoft Inc. announced this week a deal with Intellisync to use its data synchronization technology, Intellisync Mobile Suite, to enable its enterprise users deployed on PeopleSoft’s Enterprise and EnterpriseOne product suites to wirelessly update data and work offline while disconnected from the corporate server.

The Data Sync engine will synchronize with CRM, SCM, HCM, (human capital management), and financial management applications wirelessly without user intervention.

“A user would access the application just as they do today without worrying about whether the data was synched with the server or not because it would be handled automatically for them behind the scenes, whether the application is open or not,” said Tom Schmidt, product strategy director at PeopleSoft.

Following synchronization a user could work in the application while disconnected from the network only to resynchronize once a wireless or wired connection became available.

Prior to the agreement with Intellisync, PeopleSoft offered its own mobile synchronization solution for remote workers, but it was lightweight and required user initiation, said Benjamin Wesson, senior product manager of mobile tools infrastructure group at PeopleSoft.

“The Intellisync solution offers the full suite of functionality experience on the connected client,” said Wesson.

According to Gerry Purdy, principal at MobileTrax, the days of the major enterprise software vendors trying to build their own mobile platform are numbered because the mobile market is expanding far beyond their capability.

“These vendors need to partner with people who have the more robust engineering solutions that fit with thousands of devices and work throughout the entire infrastructure,” said Purdy.

The Intellisync system also monitors bandwidth to prevent updates if access is too slow or to allocate a chunk of bandwidth for an update.

While Intellisync’s Data Sync engine is available for handheld as well as portable devices, the PeopleSoft mobile application solution is at present available only on notebooks and tablets.

“We are in the process of building out our handheld application,” said Wesson.

PeopleSoft has not yet announced availability.
