She smiles when she talks about the concept of a government organization that is both “efficient and effective,” but Fariba Anderson is absolutely serious about making Municipal Property Assessment Corp. an example to her peers in the public sector and beyond.
Anderson, the CIO and vice-president of information services at MPAC, is the guest-star in this video clip recently uploaded by Microsoft Canada to YouTube that discusses her decision to migrate data to a private cloud environment. With more than nine million property owners and 44 municipalities that use its data, MPAC covers one of the largest jurisdictions of its kind worldwide, Anderson says in the clip.
What’s interesting about this video case study is that it offers very few details about the Microsoft products and services involved, but instead becomes a tribute of sorts to former Information and Privacy Commissioner Anne Cavoukian, whose “Privacy By Design” approach become a guiding principle of how Anderson said she deployed MPAC’s private cloud. Of course, property assessment information is publicly availably by law, but Anderson said MPAC has to be very careful about avoiding personally identifiable data.
“We have embraced privacy 1,000 percent,” she said. “It can be done. I’m doing it, and I’m doing it in a government, not-for-profit organization.”
