Lightening up with some new funny features

Flipping through this issue of ComputerWorld Canada, you might notice a few changes — ones that will hopefully bring a smile to your face and help you, in some small way, deal with the pressures of managing all things IT.

We’ve introduced a few new (hopefully) humourous features and enhanced a few older ones in an effort to help us all remember that, even though IT is serious business, it is also a damn entertaining sector filled with a lot of funny stuff and amusing people.

Look no further than the bottom of the facing page to have a gander at our new editorial cartoon by Andrew Toos. He licenses his business and lifestyle cartoons through CartoonResource.com. Toos’ work appears in cartoon panel and cartoon strip form in hundreds of newspapers and magazines in the U.S. and around the world. His work highlights the lighter side of our industry. We’re happy to have him on board and hope he provides a laugh or two.

Over on our Logging Off page, you’ll also notice a host of changes. Most notably, we’re happy to now be running PCWorld.ca Editor Jim Ducharme’s column. Our resident expert on personal technologies, from games to business productivity gadgets, Jim will bring his whimsical takes on end-user tools to the publication each issue.

Jim is a veteran of the broadcast industry, having spent 16 years at radio stations across Ontario as a radio personality. His intriguing resume also includes diplomas in computer programming and broadcasting.

Jim was in San Francisco at the height of the dot-com boom a few years back, setting up the world’s first online gaming network: TEN. Jim does a good job of cracking his colleagues up around this office, so we thought it would be a good idea to share his humour with the ComputerWorld audience.

Below Jim’s column we’ve brought back out IT Crossword from Myles Mellor. And on the right side of the Logging Off page, we’ve made our Shark Tank column a regular feature, so look for it every issue.

Hopefully, these dashes of humour interspersed between all the “serious” stuff will help get you through those days that can be of the trying variety. Please drop me a line and let me know if you like what you see.
