Symantec monitors DDoS attack on U.S. and South Korean government Web sites
Symantec Security Response is urging computer users to update their security software and incorporate general best practices to help stop a DDoS (distributed denial-of-service) attack affecting U.S. and South Korean government, financial and media Web sites.
“A portion of the attack is being carried out by a piece of malware Symantec has identified as w32.dozer and variants of the MyDoom worm that appear to be infecting computers globally,” states Symantec.
The threat is mostly being distributed as an e-mail attachment, which downloads a package containing three elements: Trojan.dozer, a list of host sites and the MyDoom worm. The attack initially leveraged over 50,000 computers, according to Symantec, and is “only a fraction of the one that is still being created by Downadup/Conficker.”
Sun Microsystems breaks benchmark records
Sun Microsystems Inc. has reported “multiple record-breaking results on industry-standard Business Intelligence/Data Warehousing (BIDW) and e-mail serving benchmarks.”
The company set a new world record on the SPECmail2009 benchmark for the Sun Storage 7110 Unified Storage System, propelled by the Sun Fire X4275 server and powered by two Intel Xeon X5570 processors.
The first large scale grid validation of the SAS Grid Computing 9.2 release was set by seven Sun Fire X2200 M2 servers with AMD Opteron processors running the Solaris 10 OS and the Sun Storage 7410 Unified Storage System.
The company also set new performance and price/performance records on the TPC-H benchmark at the 30TB scale factor for a cluster of 43 Sun Fire X4540 storage servers equipped with AMD Opteron processors running the OpenSolaris operating system.
Sun also announced “outstanding performance on the two-tier SAP Sales and Distribution (SD) Standard Application Benchmark and the SAS Analytics grid test.”
