HP releases next generation firewall

Hewlett-Packard Co. has joined a number of manufacturers in producing next generation firewalls.

The company announced Tuesday a series of new products and services to make enterprises more secure including the TippingPoint Next Generation Firewall, which includes over 7,400 filters to block vulnerabilities.

The announcement was covered by Network World U.S.

They come in five models, starting with the 1U-sized S1050F, with firewall performance of 500 Mbps under optimum conditions and goes to the 2U-sized S8010F with 10 Gbps throughput. With IPS and application control turned on, performance drops in half.

The S1050F can handle 250,000 concurrent sessions, while the top of the line S8010F can handle 20 million.

HP’s Tipping Point division, which gained in 2009 by buying 3Com, is known for making intrusion protection devices. Now it is expanding into firewalls with IPS capability.

HP also announced Threat Central, a community sourced intelligence platform, which it says will help real-time collaboration between organizations.
